A Buying Guide for HO Model Trains

by Onera on August 11, 2009

For a neophyte in the world of model-railroading hobby, choosing the right model train is a nightmare. There are a lot of model trains to choose from but the HO model train is probably the best there is. HO models are the most popular and readily available trains. Wondering what HO stands for? H goes for half and O referring to the standard size therefore HO model trains translates to half of O size model trains.

Before entering that shop to buy one, here are some guides for you to consider:

Space and scale: Space is the first thing to bear in mind when trying to build a model train. How wide the space you want for your model train. The scale tells you how big the train is. Check label if it is HO. Most model train enthusiasts favor HO model train because it entails a small space for a regular setup yet its details are great.

Requirements: An HO model train runs only on HO model railroads. You have the option as whether you will set it up piece-by-piece or get a complete ready-to-run set. When you buy an HO scale set, check on the label and the contents. Usually, a complete HO set lacks frills related with model railroad setups such as sceneries. If you’ve already set it up, you can just buy the parts you desire and just add them on the set. But make sure that the pieces you buy are of the same scale for an elaborate layout.

Things to check: Another thing to check when buying an HB model train is the DDC. It is easily located since it is a big label. It is placed somewhere in your model train. When the DDC is enabled you can easily run other model trains at the same time. If you cannot find the DDC, ask help from the shop assistant.

You can learn many things from people who are already in the hobby. Some people who have been running HO models have a lot to say. If not, try visiting a model train shop and not just some hobby shops. Although hobby
